A study permit is a document offered by Canadian immigration authorities that allows international students to study in Canada. Overseas students are not permitted to study in Canada unless they have a valid Study Permit Canada. Aside from that, students who have study permits may enroll at designated learning institutions. A Designated Learning Institution or DLI is a school approved by a province or territorial government to accept overseas students.
You can’t use your study permit as a visa. It prevents you from going to Canada. It may also be needed to have a visiting visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA).
Apply for a Canadian Visa for Study
To apply for Study Permit Canada, follow the steps outlined below.
- Check the processing times: The processing time for a Canada visa is roughly 12 weeks. It is better to check the Canadian embassy’s website to find out how long it will take to process the student visa. Please remember that the time displayed is only an estimate, not a promise.
- Determine how you will apply as there are two ways to apply.
(a) Apply online: To apply online, you need to have access to a camera or scanner to make electronic document copies for uploading and a valid credit card. You will still be required to present a finger scan at the regional visa application center (VAC). Remember that in the case of online applications, you must visit the VFS offices to hand in your passports and provide confirmation of the form and fee payment. The steps would only vary regarding documents you must carry to the VAC.
(b) Apply on paper: Download the application kit and read the instruction manual. The instruction booklet offers vital information on study permits and guidelines to assist you in completing your application. Read the guidelines thoroughly and make use of the document checklist. You may apply on paper only under two conditions:
- If you have any disability that prevents you from applying online
- If you hold a travel document for non-national residents, refugees, or stateless persons

- Pay the processing fee: Visa fees must be paid in addition to VFS Global service fees when submission of an application via the VFS, whether by mail or in person. In all situations, the processing fee is non-refundable.
- Suppose you are traveling with your spouse/common-law partner and children and are applying for temporary resident visas, work permits, or study permits. In that case, you must pay the relevant processing costs.
- Submit your application with the following supporting documents: You must visit the nearest VFS office. Once there, pay the service fees and bring in your completed application to receive a receipt. This receipt contains your one-of-a-kind tracking number, which you will need to follow the status of your application online.
If your Study Permit Canada application is approved, you will get a notification from the government of Canada requesting your passport. The passport and request letter can be submitted in person or through VFS. You will be provided a letter of introduction and a temporary resident visa.
