The study permit is a document that permits foreign nationals to study in Canada at designated learning institutions (DLIs). The majority of foreign nationals studying in Canada require a study permit. During the Canada Student Visa Process, ensure that you have all the required documentation. You must apply before entering Canada.
Your study permit is not equivalent to a visa. It prohibits your entry into Canada. Additionally, a visiting visa or electronic travel authorization (eTA) may be necessary.
Eligibility Requirements
To study in Canada, you must:
- are enrolled in a DLI
- show that you have enough money to pay for the service
- your tuition fees
- any living expenses you incur while in Canada and any expenses your family incurs and
- transportation back to Canada for yourself and any family members that accompany you
- obtain a police certificate (if required), obey the law, and have no criminal record
- get a medical exam (if required) and stay in good health
- proof that you intend to leave Canada once your study permit expires

Before applying for the Study Permit Canada, get your documents ready.
When applying, you must submit
- acceptance letter from the designated learning institution (DLI) you will be attending
- as many of the required documents as feasible must be submitted
- a letter explaining any missing papers resulting from COVID-19
If you intend to study in Quebec, you need to present a valid Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) or a letter of permission for your CAQ.

If you are applying for a study permit, you must do so online, regardless of where you are in the world.
In order to apply on paper, you must meet the following criteria:
- Having a disability that prevents you from applying online
- Have an identity or travel document for non-national residents, refugees, or stateless individuals
